Hi, there!

A Passion for the Black Community

My professional career is driven by my unwavering love for and commitment to the Black community. The thrust of my work is to celebrate Black humanity and help people overcome the personal, social, and systemic obstacles that impede progress.

About Cindy Hurst: A Champion for
Black Humanity

Cindy Hurst is a licensed social worker, filmmaker, author, and public speaker with more than two decades of experience. She is dedicated to championing issues that affect Black and marginalized individuals, families, and communities. Throughout her career, Hurst recognized how systemic oppression creates profound disparities in housing, incarceration, and employment. However, she also identified personal and familial challenges, such as colorism, harsh parenting methods, and health issues stemming from generational trauma and racial inequities.

In response, Hurst founded Cindy Hurst SOULutions (formerly The Sankofa Project), a production agency created to affirm Black humanity and provide safe, healing spaces to discuss these delicate topics.

Filmmaker, Author, and Public Speaker

As a pioneer of the natural hair movement, Hurst produced her groundbreaking 2009 documentary, Natural Woman, which explores Black women's decision to wear their hair naturally. The film led to speaking engagements across the U.S. and in Europe, where she facilitated discussions on cultural and racial standards of beauty. She also authored The Natural Mommy and Daughter Coloring Book as a companion piece.

Her other works include:

  • Familiar Spirit, a foreign short film.

  • Remembering a Forgotten First: The Story of Charlie Granger, a biographical movie.

  • A Ho-Ho Healthy Christmas: How Santa Beat Type 2 Diabetes, a children's book.

  • Spare the Rod. Stop the Trauma., a documentary examining physical violence toward Black children.

Hurst has gained a solid reputation as an effective group facilitator and public speaker, captivating audiences with visually stunning presentations infused with film, video, and storytelling. She also produces Public Service Announcements and promotional videos for social agencies.

With a passion for creating macro-level change, Hurst is actively involved in advocacy and community development.
